THE JOHN GOLEBY LIGHT.
This is the new metal tower for The John Goleby Light that has replaced the original steel tower constructed when the Gold Coast Seaway opened in 1986.
The light tower is located in Harley Park, Marine Parade, Labrador.
The John Goleby Light is the rear centre line lead light that is lined up with another structure on the Eastern side of Wavebreak Island for vessels entering the seaway. The light shines Yellow during the day (FY Day) and Blue at night. The structure (front Lead) on Wavebreak Island has no day light but is Blue at night 4 seconds isophase (Iso Bu 4s).
Vessels intending to enter the Gold Coast Seaway from the south should first pick up the south eastern lead by lining up the Green beacon (Porpoise Point) at the end of the north seaway wall with the white light on top of Bay View Tower on a bearing of 291 deg True. (The light on Bayview Tower is white and has the flash rate of 5 seconds and is occulting --- on more than it is off: Oc 5s--- there is no day light on Bayview Tower, even though the chart says that it does.) Vessels should then turn left when lining up the front lead on Wavebreak Island with The John Goleby Light on a bearing of 255 deg True which is the centre line of the seaway.
As there is no leads from the north, vessels approaching from this direction are advised to sail past the seaway entrance then turn back to pick up the south eastern lead. Vessels entering the seaway should have a local area chart that shows these leads to refer to.
Mariners should Note that these notes were correct at 13 Aug 2007 and could have changed by now. Please check your charts and “Notices to Mariners” for the latest information.
