History of Volunteer Marine Rescue at Southport

“Air Sea Rescue” at Southport was founded by Mr Reg. Leigh-Smith in the early 1960’s. He established a rescue service from his home on the Isle of Capri. At a meeting on 1st December 1968 at the Southport RSL Club, the Southport Surfers Paradise Air Sea Rescue was established as a qualified Association.

In July 1969 “Air Sea Rescue Southport” obtained their first rescue boat, a “Haines Hunter” with twin 100 HP motors at a cost of $4012, which was christened JAYCEE 11
